The most common print design mistakes - and how to avoid them easily
No matter how perfect your design looks, printing mistakes can still happen. Has it ever happened to you that you printed a flyer, business card or brochure and the final result looked completely different from what you saw on screen? Frustrating, right?
The good news is that most print preparation mistakes can be avoided if you know what to pay attention to.
1. Missing bleed
Paper cutting machines are not always perfectly precise. A shift of 1-2 mm can leave a thin white line around the design.
How to avoid it: Add at least 2 or 3 mm of bleed on all sides of the document. This means that the background and images should extend beyond the final document size.
2. Ignoring safe margins
If you place text or important elements too close to the edge, there is a risk that they will be cut off during production.
Solution: Leave a safe zone of at least 5 mm inside the edges of the document. For catalogs, magazines and brochures, leave extra space near the binding area.
3. Using borders too close to the edge
Borders can look nice on screen, but cutting is not always perfectly precise, so borders can appear uneven.
How to prevent it: Avoid using borders near the cutting line. Even with careful work, a shift of 1 mm can happen.
4. Using RGB instead of CMYK colors
Designs created in RGB look good on screen, but colors can be very different when printed.
Solution: When preparing a file for printing, set the color mode to CMYK. RGB is for digital screens, while CMYK is the printing standard.
5. Low image resolution
Blurred or pixelated elements usually come from using low-resolution images.
How to avoid it: Use images and graphics with a resolution of at least 300 DPI whenever possible.
6. Fonts not converted or embedded
If fonts are not embedded or converted to curves, the file may open incorrectly on another computer.
Solution: Convert text to curves or embed fonts before sending the file for printing.
7. Sending the wrong file format
Files such as Word, PowerPoint or screenshots are not ideal for professional printing.
Solution: Send a print-ready PDF whenever possible, with bleed, CMYK color mode and correct dimensions.
